proud to be a charter member of this HAP.
Shape Up! King County
The goal of Shape UP! King County is
to make it easier for older adults living in King County, Washington to find
programs which will help them be healthy and active. Key partners in this collaborative
effort are Senior Services of Seattle/King County, University
of Washington Health Promotion Research Center, Center
for Healthy Aging, C.H.E.F.,
and, of course, HAP. We hope this resource
will prove useful to seniors and the programs that serve them.
Sound Steps™ Toolkit
A guide to helping organizations replicate a successful physical activity program for older adults.
In the summer of 2003, HAP launched a two-year pilot program for seniors called Sound Steps™ to help sedentary adults become more physically active through a fun walking activity.
Local community centers recruited, organized, and supported older adults who joined groups that would meet at least once a week, sometimes more, to walk on pre-determined neighborhood paths. Participants kept logs of their progress and developed their own "walk buddies."
In its first year, Sound Steps attracted approximately 500 participants. In the second year, 620 people registered!
If your organization or community is interested in making Sound Steps part of your activities to encourage older adults to walk regularly for fun and fitness, try the Sound Steps Toolkit. You’ll get full details and resources to help you start, support, and sustain a Sound Steps program of your own.
1-888-4ELDERS
For years, older adults in Puget Sound have been saying that it can
be difficult to get quick answers to everyday questions such as:
- How do I get help with Social Security and Medicare?
- Where do I go for health care, dental care, or flu shots?
- How can I get meals delivered to my home or get help with shopping?
- What are my best options for housing or assisted living?
- Where can I find volunteer opportunities?
Thanks to the HAP, it's easy to get the answers
to these and other questions by dialing 1-888-4ELDERS (1-888-435-3377).
When you call 1-888-4ELDERS, you'll talk to a live, knowledgeable person who
will give you the information you're looking for—fast, free of charge, and without
pressuring you to buy something. You can also visit HAP's website at www.4elders.org.
