Sue Anderson
Program Director, Health Equity Partners™


Sue is responsible for providing leadership to and management of Health Equity Partners™ efforts. She works to establish key strategic relationships with individuals, state and national governmental agencies, corporations and other agencies and organizations with the goal of eliminating health inequities. She also takes the lead on seeking, submitting, and obtaining new governmental funding opportunities as well as assists in the development, implementation and evaluation of grant giving and health education programs.

Sue has been a health educator for over 25 years. Sue has helped hundreds of Washington state schools implement coordinated school health education programs and, most recently established and directed C.H.E.F.'s early childhood initiative. Sue received her bachelor’s degree in community health education from Western Washington University and also attended the three-month Virginia Satir International Summer Training Institute. She has been with C.H.E.F. since 1982.

Kathy Burgoyne, PhD
Vice President, Health Equity Partners™


Kathy is responsible for the operations of Health Equity Partners™. She provides vision and leadership for all Health Equity Partners business and product development, philanthropic activity, and evaluation. As an officer of the organization and a member of the Management Team, Kathy is responsible for the organization’s fiscal and strategic direction and performance for achieving the organization’s mission and financial objectives. She is also responsible for providing staff support to the Board of Director’s Nominating Committee.

Kathy has been working in the prevention field for over 25 years, both as a practitioner and as a researcher. Kathy has a bachelor’s degree in political science and education, a master’s degree in counseling, and a PhD in educational policy and leadership. She joined C.H.E.F. in 2002.

Larry Clark
President and CEO


As President and CEO of Comprehensive Health Education Foundation (C.H.E.F.®), Larry's responsibilities include working with the board of directors to set the overall vision and strategic direction for the organization, diversifying and increasing revenue and funding streams, acting as primary spokesman for the organization, and overseeing C.H.E.F.'s operations and staff.

Outside of C.H.E.F., Larry also serves on several boards, including Grantmakers in Aging, Community Anti-Drug Coalitions of America (CADCA), and the Center for Social and Emotional Learning. In addition, he is a member of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation National Advisory Committee for their Local Initiative Funders Program. As a leader in his field, Larry is also a frequent workshop facilitator and panel member at national foundation conferences, addressing topics on health promotion, prevention education, and capacity-building and income-generation for non-profit organizations.

Lynda Garitone
Administrative Services Director


Lynda is responsible for designing, planning and administering the organization’s Human Resource management programs and policies. She is the liaison between the President and the Vice Presidents and the Board of Directors. She is also responsible for the development and administration of office and facilities management and procedures, contract/legal document management, and all intellectual property management and maintenance. Lynda holds a Professional in Human Resources certification. She joined C.H.E.F. in 1982.

Marvin Hamanishi
Vice President and CFO


Marvin is responsible for the financial and administrative areas of the organization, including accounting and finance, payroll, investments, insurance, budgeting, internal controls, information technology, human resources, facilities and office management. As an officer of the organization and a member of the Management Team, he is responsible for both short and long range planning of the organization’s objectives.

Prior to joining C.H.E.F., Marvin served as the director of finance at a high-tech research and development firm that developed a training simulator for the Department of Defense. He also served as the senior vice president at a regional bank and worked as an auditor at PricewaterhouseCoopers, one of the Big Four accounting firms. Marvin is a Certified Public Accountant and a Certified Financial Planner. He received his BA and MBA from the University of Washington. Marvin has been with C.H.E.F. since 1989.

Karen Lewis
Program Director, Health Equity Partners™


Karen is responsible for providing leadership to and management of Health Equity Partners™ efforts. She works to establish key strategic relationships with individuals, state and national governmental agencies, corporations and other agencies and organizations with the goal of eliminating health inequities. Karen assists in the development, implementation and evaluation and dissemination of grant giving and health education programs. Karen also takes the lead on seeking, submitting, and obtaining new private funding opportunities.

Karen’s experience includes extensive health education program management, curriculum and training development, community collaborations, grants management and classroom teaching. Karen received her bachelor’s degree in education and biology and she is also a Certified Health Education Specialist. Karen has been with C.H.E.F. since 1989.

Kari Lewis
Executive Assistant & Grant Manager, Health Equity Partners™


Kari provides clerical, administrative, and support services to executives and the Health Equity Partners™ division. As the Grant Manager, Kari manages and administers incoming and outgoing grants. Kari joined C.H.E.F. in 2005.

Michelle McCain
Accounting Manager


Michelle is responsible for the preparation of timely and accurate financial information for management and the Board of Directors, preparation of the organization’s payroll and related filings, and coordination of the organization’s annual forecast and annual budget process. She also supervises and coordinates the activities of Accounts Receivable and Accounts Payable, and coordinates the billing and financial reporting of private and federally funded grants. Michelle has been with C.H.E.F. since 1990.

Karla Nuss
Finance Generalist


Karla is responsible for all aspects of Accounts Receivable and Payable up to the reconciliation with the General Ledger. She analyzes accounting documents for accuracy, identifies problem areas, proposes solutions and initiates corrective actions. Karla also records accounting details of business transactions and is reponsible for the collection of customer accounts. Karla joined C.H.E.F. in 2008..

Julie Peterson
Senior Director of Public Affairs


Julie is responsible for the vision, leadership, planning and implementation of a Public Affairs plan that promotes the organization’s mission through public policy.

Julie’s public policy advocacy and legislative work is recognized by Philanthropy Northwest, Washington State Department of Social and Health Services’ Division of Alcohol and Substance Abuse, Community Anti-Drug Coalitions of America (CADCA) and the National Network for Safe and Drug-Free Schools and Communities. Currently, Julie serves as the past president of the Washington Association for Substance Abuse and Violence Prevention. Prior to her arrival at C.H.E.F., she was the deputy director of the Washington State Traffic Safety Commission. She served as the agency's legislative liaison and a member of the interagency work group on drugs. Julie joined C.H.E.F. in 1989.

Ned Schaub
Partnership Development Director & Project Director, MissionWise®


Ned is responsible for identifying, managing and maximizing the impact of numerous partnership relationships and programs, including relationships with philanthropic partners, knowledge partners, and other social sector partners. In addition, he provides business and strategic planning consultation, training, and coaching to organizations in the social sector. Ned also assists with the development of the MissionWise model and provides guidance to other staff and consultants.

Ned has worked in the social sector for over 14 years, predominantly in social services and philanthropy. In 2001, he joined the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation to develop program substance and was also responsible for the development and management of a portfolio of grants. Prior to that, Ned was a program assistant in the MacArthur Foundation’s Conservation and Sustainable Development Program. Ned holds a Master’s in Nonprofit Administration from the University of San Francisco. Ned joined C.H.E.F. in 2006.

Joel Schmidt
IT Engineer


Joel is responsible for developing and implementing objectives, policies and programs regarding technology, coordination and control of computer systems, hardware, and software, security, and developing, creating, managing and maintaining all Web related content and services. He confers with and advises user departments on technology plans, objectives, policies, procedures, technical problems, priorities, training and methods. Joel also supports and maintains the organizations telecommunications and copy/AV equipment. Joel joined C.H.E.F. in 2004.

Laura Torrell
Program Director, MissionWise®


Laura is responsible for internal operations of the MissionWise® Division, including: all grants and programs, systems, and processes required for the effective delivery of offerings. She oversees the delivery of seminars, webinars, plans, budgets, reports and timelines. She is also responsible for developing, monitoring and refining the systems to support the MissionWise division, including internal communications, dashboards, evaluation, and online tools.

Laura received her Bachelor of Science degree in Community Health from Central Washington University and is a certified Health Education Specialist. She is a current member and former board member of the Pacific Northwest Society of Public Heath Education, as well as a current member of Eta Sigma Gamma, a professional honor in Health Education, and the Social Enterprise Alliance. Laura joined C.H.E.F. in 2000.

Michael Oxman
Communications Consultant


Since 2001, Michael has led strategic communications for Comprehensive Health Education Foundation (C.H.E.F.®). He brings 25 years of global communications experience from the for-profit world to the nonprofit sector. At C.H.E.F., Michael oversees all internal and external communications, with primary responsibility for the development, design, creation, and dissemination of the organization’s core messaging strategies.

Prior to his work with C.H.E.F., Michael was a senior communications executive at Euro RSCG Worldwide in the firm’s Chicago office. During his time at Euro RSCG, Michael led strategic brand development for Walgreens, one of its largest private sector clients, and also initiated his work in the public sector for Comprehensive Health Education Foundation (C.H.E.F.). Prior to joining Euro RSCG, Michael was a Senior Vice President at D'Arcy Masius Benton & Bowles (DMB&B) in its Detroit office, leading strategic brand development for the Cadillac Motor Car Division of General Motors. Earlier in his career, Michael held executive positions at other leading advertising agencies, advising large clients on brand strategy for venerable brands such as Chiquita Brands Worldwide, The Iams Pet Food Company, and The Stroh Brewery Company.

Michael began his career at BBDO Worldwide after receiving his Masters Degree from the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University in Chicago. He obtained his Bachelors Degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
