The Greater Tacoma Community Foundation has selected C.H.E.F.®
and Health Equity Partners as a recipient of a Vibrant Community Grant, supporting our Community Health Advocate Program at new Salishan, Tacoma Housing Authority’s largest community and the most racially diverse public housing community in
The Community Health Advocates Program is an innovative, grassroots approach to address the problems found in public housing and with low income and very low income individuals. It is another example of C.H.E.F.’s ongoing work to reduce the risk factors related to chronic disease, reduce barriers to better health and to help make healthy choices the easy choice for our most vulnerable residents.
These natural leaders are essentially 360º cultural translators, helping their neighbors gain a better understanding of health related issues and how to use the services available to them while providing culturally relevant feed-back to the Housing Authority and others to improve mutual understanding. Their work and their contacts with families, friends and neighbors helps strengthen the Salishan community.
The Health Advocates Program builds on other successful partnerships that C.H.E.F. has formed at Salishan, including Salishan Shine, when Tacoma Housing Authority and C.H.E.F. teamed to create outdoor community space: first-class outdoor play spaces for children; outdoor art; comfortable and welcoming outdoor spaces to gather, garden, cook, exercise, eat and visit; a community kitchen and vegetable gardens, and the restoration of local walking trails.
The Greater Tacoma Community Foundation is a trusted partner with the Piece County community, fostering generosity by connecting people who care with
causes that matter.
