Save the Date—5th Annual Washington Alliance for Healthy Aging Summit
The Washington Alliance for Healthy Aging (WAHA) is pleased to announce the 5th Annual Washington Alliance for Healthy Aging Summit to take place May
31, 2007 at the Tacoma Convention and Trade Center. The theme of the conference is "Creating
Healthy Aging for All: Strategies to End Health Disparities."
One of the featured keynote speakers that we are honored to host is Phil Lane,
Jr. Phil has a vision—one that is complex, expansive, and founded in basic humanitarian principles. Though it contains applications in the realm of international politics, it is not meant for politicians; it is meant for the people.
Phil is the brains behind "The Fourth Way," a document that lays out a plan for global peace and prosperity in the 21st century. Broadly populist in nature and ideologically grounded in aboriginal folk wisdom, the document is subtitled, "An Indigenous Contribution for Building Sustainable and Harmonious Prosperity in the Americas."
"The Fourth Way" is an urgent cry for unity among indigenous peoples everywhere, with the message that such a collective bonding carries social, spiritual, economic and political implications for a worldwide demographic that largely has existed on the margins of mainstream society. Lane believes the "timing is right," and stated so recently at an international conference on endogenous development and biocultural diversity in Geneva, Switzerland.
Phil’s inspirational and genuine style will inspire us to reflect on our
own health and to think creatively and compassionately as we strive to make our
state and world an equitable place for all people.
We are also privileged to host Maxine Hayes, MD, MPH who will join us to provide opening remarks. She will outline and help us to better understand the disparities that exist in our state, highlight solutions, and emphasize critical pockets of opportunities to improve the health of disenfranchised older adults.
Dr. Hayes is the State Health Officer for the Washington State Department of Health. As the state’s top public health doctor, her role includes advising the governor and the secretary of health on issues ranging from health promotion and chronic disease prevention, to emergency response, including pandemic influenza preparedness. She also works closely with the medical community, local health departments and community groups.
Prior to her appointment as Health Officer, Dr. Hayes was the Assistant Secretary of Community and Family Health. Dr. Hayes is clinical professor of pediatrics at the University of Washington, School of Medicine, and on the MCH faculty of the School of Public Health.
Dr. Hayes was the 1999 Distinguished Alumna of the Year for the State University of New York School of Medicine at Buffalo and the Year 2000 recipient of the Stockton Kimball Award. In 2000 she was presented an honorary Doctorate of Science by former Acting Surgeon General and President of Spelman College, Dr. Audrey Manley. She is the recipient of many awards and honors for her work in maternal and child health, including the American Medical Association’s 2002 Dr. Nathan Davis Award and the 2003 Heroes in Health Care Lifetime Achievement Award through the Washington Health Foundation. Dr. Hayes was elected to IOM, October 2006. Dr. Hayes is also a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics.
The conference will also include interactive workshops to engage participants in discussions regarding solutions to the health disparities that exist for the diverse population of older adults in Washington. This includes health disparities for racial and ethnic populations, people living in or near poverty, sexual minorities, and seniors who live in rural communities.
